Mission

Operation Sail, (OpSail), a national non-profit organization dedicated to promoting goodwill among nations, and the development of youth through sail training, was conceived in 1961 by Frank Braynard and N. Following the endorsement of President John F. Kennedy, OpSail came to life in 1964 by successfully bringing the remaining tall ships of the world to New York City in conjunction with the 64’ World’s Fair.

Since then, OpSail events have taken place in 1976 for the Bicentennial, 1986 Lady Liberties100th, 1992 for the Columbus 500th, and 2000 for the Millennium—and each event has been larger than the last.

Company Overview

This 2012, Operation Sail will once again bring the glory of tall ships to the American seaboard to celebrate the bicentennial of our nation anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner.

A parade of magnificent tall ships and warships, from over 25 nations, will sail to five historic ports: New Orleans, Norfolk, Boston, Baltimore, and New York City and join America in commemoration of this national milestone.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary announced today its sponsorship

of “Ready, Set, Wear It!” - 2012. The Coast Guard Auxiliary joins participants around the globe

to heighten awareness of different life jacket types that are available, including inflatable life

jackets and set a world record for the most inflatable life jackets worn and inflated.

The annual event is hosted by the National Safe Boating Council (NSBC) in partnership with the

Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) and serves as the kick-off to National Safe Boating Week, May

19-25, and the official launch of the 2012 North American Safe Boating Campaign. Educating the

boating public about the safety and comfort of inflatable life jackets has been a main focus of the

North American Safe Boating Campaign.

What are the elements of a seaworthy boat? They are smartly designed, well-built and resistant to capsizing and sinking. They have reliable power, are capable of relatively high speeds in rough water, have good steering control and the ability to accelerate quickly, and more. Pilot boats, of course, are among the most seaworthy craft you’ll find on coastal waters. In this country, C. Raymond Hunt Associates designs a line of a rugged, fast, deep-vee pilot boats.
