Mackerel Rocks Rescue
At 5.30pm on Monday 29th June, RNLI Bangor Lifeboat launched to rescue two young men who had become stranded by rising tides.
Crew from Bangor Lifeboat had just finished a 2 hour training exercise when they received an emergency alert from Belfast Coastguard requesting they rescue two young men who had become marooned by rising tides.
Volunteer crew quickly proceeded to an area of coastline, know as the Mackerel Rocks and rescued the two young stranded anglers.
The ‘Mackerel Rocks’ are an outcrop of rocks which lie between the Eisenhower Pier and Ballyholme Bay on the Bangor coastline and as the name suggests are locally known as one of the best places to fish for mackerel. At low water they encompass a large area and this has led many an unsuspecting angler into a false sense of security. To promote safety awareness North Down Borough Council have erected signs close to these rocks warning anglers about the danger of rising tides.
