Coast Guard, Good Samaritan rescue boater from vessel fire

NEW YORK - A Good Samaritan rescued a person in the water after their 27-foot boat became engulfed in flames about one mile east of Coast Guard Station Fire Island, N.Y., at 2:10 p.m. today. The Good Samaritan contacted Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound via marine band radio channel 16 at 2 p.m. after seeing the boater attempting to swim toward the shore. The Good Samaritan transferred the boater to a Coast Guard Station Fire Island rescue vessel, which brought him to awaiting emergency medical personnel at the station.
