Six Air National Guardsmen rescued from capsized vessel near Columbia River bar
On May 29th, 2009 Station Cape Disappointment received a Mayday call over the radio on channel 16. I was assigned as the tower watch stander of the day. After hearing a pipe for the Officer of the Day to contact the Communications Center for what sounded like a search and rescue case, I proceeded to the Communications Center to assist. The only information known was the approximate bearing of the distress cal, 266 degrees True off the Megler Tower. After being passed this little information, I headed to the tower along with Seaman Jennifer Bull. As soon as we entered the tower, I immediately started scanning through binoculars at Clatsop Spit, along the South Jetty, as well as offshore where the call was presumed to have come from. Not having any visual of persons in distress, I diverted my attention more to the north towards the North Jetty and Peacock Spit.
