The U.S. Coast Guard has released a Report of Investigation for each of two fatal catamaran cases that occurred less than four months apart two years ago in Hawaii waters.

The Melody, carrying about 1,000 passengers and 500 crew, was en route from Durban, South Africa to Genoa, Italy, on a 22-day luxury cruise when pirates in skiffs opened fire late Saturday. The cruise ship’s security detail returned fire, startling the pirates, who gave up and turned around.

If I told you that statistics on boats sinking showed that the dock is four times more dangerous than the open waters, you might tell me to check my calculator, amongst other things. But study after study show that four times as many boats sink at the dock than under way! Why is that???
Tobermory RNLI lifeboat assists divers in Sound of... →
Tobermory RNLI lifeboat launched yesterday morning (Wednesday 29 April 2009) to assist two divers in the Sound of Mull.
The divers had been diving the wreck of the Rondo, when one got into difficulties underwater. The pair ascended to the surface, and were recovered to the dive vessel. They were transferred to Tobermory RNLI lifeboat and given medical assistance.

Coast Guard Group Astoria received a call from the owner and operator of a 33-foot riviera pleasure craft that his boat was on fire and that he and the other person on board were in need of assistance. The owner and the other person on the boat were able to deploy their life raft and float away from the burning vessel.
